Business Leaders Roundtable on Immigration

The Conference Board of Canada’s Inaugural Meeting of the Business Leaders Roundtable on Immigration.

On May 24th, 2007 I was invited to The Conference Board of Canada’s Inaugural Meeting of the Business Leaders Roundtable on Immigration, in Ottawa. This invitation was linked directly to my published interview with the Globe and Mail/ Financial Post last year in March. In that interview I had mentioned the on going struggles faced by skilled professionals immigrants in getting recognition from Canadian professional associations. I also stated that these individuals after having gone through lengthy and expensive process of accreditation, continue to face obstacles in job placement due to lack of Canadian work experience.

John Leech the Executive Director of Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of British Columbia, ASTTBC  was very supportive and encouraging of my participation in the Roundtable discussions and as a result, I was on the flight to Ottawa, and  once again hopeful to see a change in attitude in the way we treat foreign trained professionals.

The theme of the meeting was The World in Canada: How Immigration is Fundamental to our Prosperity and Your Business Success. The participants shared stories and insights to help the Conference Board set the agenda for its brand new Centre on Immigration Issues, which will :

  • Improve outcomes for Canadian business through higher level strategic management of the potential contribution of immigrants to business performance and the bottom line;
  • Engage business leaders in making the required investments to drive this performance; and
  • Create a team of committed and creative leaders willing to take on the issues, champion change in corporate practices, programs and behavior, and fully support immigrant integration to the workforce and community.
